2012: We’re Here…

February 8th, 2012 by Mike

At Self Connection we have so many books, CDs, and DVDs,  all providing interpretations of the Mayan Calendar and all trying to make predictions about what takes place at the end of this year.    And if you talk to 10 people about what they think is going to be the result of the end of the Mayan Calendar and the outcome of this year, you will likely get 10 different opinions.     Of course, nobody really knows for sure, at least, I definitely don’t,  and so it’s up to each person to listen to the various experts and soothsayers and to gather input from various sources and in the end, to form our own opinion.    One thing I am convinced of, is that it is a significant year.    Why do I think that?    Well, only because I think there is a shift happening.   The shift is in our thinking, in our government, in our business community, and in most people I talk to.    Is the shift because of the Mayan Calendar and the fact that it is 2012?   Maybe.   Is it because our society has reached a point of crisis where we are finally saying ‘enough’ and we need to change how we are living and focusing (focusing on material things, money, power, etc).     Also, maybe.   Or it’s a combination.  I guess I can believe that.

So the events we featured in January with the screening of the movie 2012:  A Time for Change, and the book launch of The Electric Jesus:  The Healing Journey of a Contemporary Gnostic, was enlightening and reassuring.   The movie itself did not focus on the Mayan Calendar (although it did review the structure of it), and it didn’t focus on what happens at the end of this year or even make an interpretation of the significance of 2012.  Instead it talked about so many neat things happening around our globe regarding our attention to the planet and the pace of innovation and the increase in our knowledge.   It was very inspirational as well as educational.  And this was by Pinchbeck, so was hardly what we were expecting.

But the book launch was the really neat piece.   Jonathan Phillips is a young (compared to me anyways) New Yorker who used to be a radical and activist against the government and society.   Then he had one of those moments we read about…you could call it an epiphany…a spiritual awakening…a brick to the forehead.    He then got involved with Daniel Pinchbeck in the creation of www.evolver.net and www.realitysandwich.com, both of which are intended to create a community of like-minded individuals/groups around the world interested in improving the planet…in a non-radical way.    From their website:    “This is a group of young, optimistic Evolvers who are hope friends and utopian pragmatists.  We see the creative choas of this time as a great gift and opportunity to rethink, reconnect, and reinvent.  Evolvers appreciate pristine mountains, open source economics, and the precocious laughter of small children”.     Not bad.    The keywords in this statement are “young” and “optimistic”.

Phillips is an apt spokesperson for this group encouraging an honest, deep examination of self and purging of the “demons” that hold us from a full expression of our wholeness and divinity.   He encourages playfulness and artistic expression along the way.      Remember, this is a young New Yorker full of angst and rebellion.    Hmmm

But here’s the big piece.    Typically, when Self Connection holds events in its workshop room, the attendees are mostly women in their 30’s to 60’s….not all of course, but typically.    The crowd we had for Jonathan’s book launch (the room was packed), were all Evolvers with an average age of….say… 24.    This group was positive, very spiritual, and very open to the changes happening.   Some of their comments were so prophetic and demonstrated such an spiritual connection, it was like having a room filled with 24-year old crystal/indigo children.   And the comments they were making about their own children were equally as impressive in terms of the children’s wisdom and worldliness.   How is that possible…at the age of 5?

So…the result it left for us older guys in the room, was that this was a fresh, positive and gentle generation that will soon be taking positions of influence in our world.   The energy in the room was palpable.   It left us with a deep feeling of hopefulenss and a renewed anticipation of the future.    Thank God.

Jerry Hicks – a great man

November 24th, 2011 by Mike

On Friday November 18th, 2011, Jerry Hicks, husband to Esther Hicks and teacher of the Law of Attraction,  passed away after a struggle with  cancer.

Jerry and Esther have been leaders in the teaching of the law of attraction and power of thought for almost 30 years.  Some people think that Rhonda Byrne and the releasing of the movie The Secret were the creators of this movement, but I would argue that Jerry and Esther were significantly more instrumental influencers.    They were teaching long before The Secret was released and have been substantially more prolific in the quantity of releases (books, cds, dvds, workshops, website) as well as the diversity and completeness of the teaching.   Marla and I are big fans of their work (and the Abraham connection) to the point where we went on two of their cruise/workshops…which we thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from (well, at least WE think so).

Now, while the main attraction has always been Esther and her channelings of Abraham, do not for a minute discount Jerry’s role in the relationship or the business.  We usually only hear from Jerry in the introductions to the workshops and products, but Jerry was the main catalyst and inspiration behind their work.  Early in Jerry’s career (probably 40-50 years ago) he was inspired and transformed by Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich (one of the earlier writings on the law of attraction although it wasn’t called that back then…it remains a Classic and top seller today).   It was Jerry who saw Esther’s ability “to allow” and began asking questions and pursuing knowledge.  After about nine months, summoned by Jerry’s inquisitiveness and Esther’s receptivity,  Abraham came knocking on her consciousness”. He was also always there in the background, supporting her and recording every word Abraham said.

Jerry has been living with cancer for a while, and so it came as no big surprise to hear of his, as Esther puts it, ‘transition to Non-physical’.  When I heard the news, I was curious to know how Esther was feeling and responding to his passing.  On one hand, she knows and teaches Abraham’s message “there is only life and more life and more life” and so you might think that she would be in complete acceptance.    On the other hand, she says “I have not yet fully come to terms with it, but I do believe that in what we are calling Jerry’s death he is discovering the next logical step of life that Abraham has always been talking about”.     That certainly shows some humility and human-ness.   I consider her words very apropos, comforting, and completely consistent with Abraham’s teachings.   Nonetheless , in this human experience, we all still grieve the loss of our partners, and from that point, I offer her our condolences and blessings.

Jerry was a multi-millionaire, but despite that, he saidI was never much interested in money. I was more interested in having a wonderful life . . . and being free.”   And so the back of their monster bus has the words “Life is supposed to be fun!”     Funny, but out of all of the teachings by Abraham and things I have read by Esther and Jerry, these are the words that I think of the most and that have inspired me the most.   I try to keep them front and center when I am faced with struggles and challenges because they remind me that nothing is so serious that I should stop having fun.   Easy to say I suppose, but they are words worth remembering.    Maybe they are Jerry’s legacy.    Maybe not.   Regardless, Jerry’s joy of life has been wonderful to behold and  his work has made a significant contribution to the improvement of this world.  He will be missed.

Thanks for everything you gave us,  Jerry…and probably continue to give us from the Non-physical world.

Deva Premal Concert Broadcast, June 9 2011

June 9th, 2011 by Mike

Today at 7:30 pm Germany-time and 11:30 am Calgary time, Deva Premal, Miten and Manose were in concert in Furth, Germany, and the concert was to be broadcast onto the Internet.   We thought it would be an exciting thing to watch on the big screen in our workshop room with a group of Premal-Miten-Manose fans.    So, we set it up and invited people to join us.    By 11:15 a group had assembled in the workshop room, ready and eager, when we noticed a message on the broadcast website saying that the event was being cancelled because of technical difficulties.   We’re not sure, but we suspect the concert still took place, but the broadcast onto the Internet certainly did not.    VERY disappointing.   Up until that moment I had been thinking (in my usual left-brain manner) that this was going to blaze new ground and show the world how the Internet and technology would open up a new way of doing things so that we could more often enjoy big-name concerts without having to travel.      This was going to be a world-first.    I guess it wasn’t meant to be…not yet…

But all was not lost.   We figured that because we came out to see a concert, that we would see a concert.   So we watched the DVD from their concert in Byron Bay a couple of years ago instead.     As it turned out, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience…it truly is a beautifully-done production with some great music and we all sang along to the mantras and even cried (well, I did) at a few places in the show.    And we had fun.

So, going forward, I am still keen to see them try this again.   Other musicians as well.  Assuming that we are not likely to see Deva/Miten/Manose in Calgary until later on in 2012,  it is potentially a wonderful alternative to see them via the Internet in the meantime.    This format is certainly not as good as in-person…obviously… but still very good.   Just having a group of people come together and singing along with the DVD was very enjoyable and seeing them on the Internet I don’t think would be a whole bunch different.   So I’m keen to try.  Here’s hoping.

Wayne Dyer – May 17 at the Jubilee – Reviews

May 19th, 2011 by Mike

I was at Wayne’s talk on Tuesday night and it was so nice to see so many people at an event where the funds raised went to support Opportunity to Grow. This very worthy charity headed by Bob Brown convinced Wayne to come to Calgary. Wayne made mention of how persistent Bob was in getting him to come to Calgary and did a very nice talk in spite of his reluctance. Wayne also had great praise for John of God who had helped him to heal from his Leukemia, the fact that his very expensive, very accurate watch was slow by 80 minutes each day he was being worked on was additonal proof to Wyane along with how he has personally been feeling since the treatments that he has been healed. It is great to hear that someone with the media clout of Wayne Dyer be so  vocal about the “Non-Physical” and how this invisible force does have relevance to our daily lives.

Movie Night – Thoughts Become Things

September 16th, 2010 by Mike

Self Connection’s first movie night this week featured the video by Mike Dooley called Thoughts Become Things.  We had 32 people out for the viewing and in the final analysis,  we were pleased with the result…the evening was a success.

The group felt that the video itself did not have any revolutionary or major new insights into the power of thought, but everyone felt that Dooley presented well and that the message was a great refresher and reinforcement of concepts previously learned.   This in itself was worthwhile.

Some of the key messages that the group took away from the video:

Inception – The Movie

August 4th, 2010 by Mike

Marla and I recently went to see the movie Inception.    We thought we were going for an afternoon of Hollywood entertainment, which we definitely got, but what we weren’t expecting was the spirituality component to the movie.    On the surface, the movie is about ‘dream state’ and how the people in the film could enter a dream together where they could influence what was happening and create their own world…much like the idea of lucid dreaming.   However, another idea was subtly introduced where the people in the dream world never came back and advocated that their life in the dream world was actually reality and the world where the dreamers came from was the real dream and not reality.   Where have we heard that concept before…except in volumes of books and films coming out now by the world’s quantum physicists.   The more we watched the more the film, to us, became a film on spirituality as opposed to just another Hollywood piece of entertainment.

Meeting Louise Hay, Joan Borysenko et al

August 4th, 2010 by Mike

I was recently at a conference in the US that was attended by “new age” suppliers as well as some of the very large publishing houses.  Probably the  the largest display of any publisher was Hay House and this year they had many of their authors in attendance.  Doreen Virtue, Denise Linn, Joan Borysenko, Gary Zukav, to name just a few.     Having met them all and listening to presentations they did at the speakers’ breakfasts, I thought I would pass on some of what I learned and some of my experience.

Joan Borysenko is an internationally known speaker in spirituality, integrative medicine and the mind/body connection.  She has her doctorate in medical sciences from Harvard Medical School and is the best-selling author of 14 books including her most recent, It’s Not The End Of The World.    Joan talked about her new book coming out early 2011  entitled Fried.  It is all about burnout and the  long journey back to recovery.  She told us she speaks from personal experience.   Mike and I both know what it is to experience complete burn out and adrenal fatigue, so this book will be of special interest to me.  I can’t wait.    I also believe it is a very timely and very topical book given the state of our society today and the stress that people are under.     The big surprise?   Joan sang a Jewish lullaby in Hebrew.  She has a lovely  singing voice.  Who knew?

Chopra – He’s still going.

February 21st, 2010 by Mike

If you had asked me a few weeks ago if I was excited about the opportunity to hear Dr. Chopra at the Jubilee on the 18th, I would probably have offered a lacklustre response such as “well, we’re going to be there anyway selling his books so I guess I might as well watch for awhile”.   I certainly don’t think I would’ve purchased a full-fare ticket to see the man if we weren’t going to be there supporting the event.

Our New Home – it’s a test

January 4th, 2010 by Mike

In our daily lives, it’s so easy to get dragged down into life’s details and forget about the big picture.   We tell ourselves that the universe has a plan and that this is meant to be and that it will all  work out fine.  We must have faith, trust,  believe, change our thinking and pick up our mood…you know, think positively.   Read the rest of this entry »
