At Self Connection we have so many books, CDs, and DVDs, all providing interpretations of the Mayan Calendar and all trying to make predictions about what takes place at the end of this year. And if you talk to 10 people about what they think is going to be the result of the end of the Mayan Calendar and the outcome of this year, you will likely get 10 different opinions. Of course, nobody really knows for sure, at least, I definitely don’t, and so it’s up to each person to listen to the various experts and soothsayers and to gather input from various sources and in the end, to form our own opinion. One thing I am convinced of, is that it is a significant year. Why do I think that? Well, only because I think there is a shift happening. The shift is in our thinking, in our government, in our business community, and in most people I talk to. Is the shift because of the Mayan Calendar and the fact that it is 2012? Maybe. Is it because our society has reached a point of crisis where we are finally saying ‘enough’ and we need to change how we are living and focusing (focusing on material things, money, power, etc). Also, maybe. Or it’s a combination. I guess I can believe that.
So the events we featured in January with the screening of the movie 2012: A Time for Change, and the book launch of The Electric Jesus: The Healing Journey of a Contemporary Gnostic, was enlightening and reassuring. The movie itself did not focus on the Mayan Calendar (although it did review the structure of it), and it didn’t focus on what happens at the end of this year or even make an interpretation of the significance of 2012. Instead it talked about so many neat things happening around our globe regarding our attention to the planet and the pace of innovation and the increase in our knowledge. It was very inspirational as well as educational. And this was by Pinchbeck, so was hardly what we were expecting.
But the book launch was the really neat piece. Jonathan Phillips is a young (compared to me anyways) New Yorker who used to be a radical and activist against the government and society. Then he had one of those moments we read about…you could call it an epiphany…a spiritual awakening…a brick to the forehead. He then got involved with Daniel Pinchbeck in the creation of www.evolver.net and www.realitysandwich.com, both of which are intended to create a community of like-minded individuals/groups around the world interested in improving the planet…in a non-radical way. From their website: “This is a group of young, optimistic Evolvers who are hope friends and utopian pragmatists. We see the creative choas of this time as a great gift and opportunity to rethink, reconnect, and reinvent. Evolvers appreciate pristine mountains, open source economics, and the precocious laughter of small children”. Not bad. The keywords in this statement are “young” and “optimistic”.
Phillips is an apt spokesperson for this group encouraging an honest, deep examination of self and purging of the “demons” that hold us from a full expression of our wholeness and divinity. He encourages playfulness and artistic expression along the way. Remember, this is a young New Yorker full of angst and rebellion. Hmmm
But here’s the big piece. Typically, when Self Connection holds events in its workshop room, the attendees are mostly women in their 30’s to 60’s….not all of course, but typically. The crowd we had for Jonathan’s book launch (the room was packed), were all Evolvers with an average age of….say… 24. This group was positive, very spiritual, and very open to the changes happening. Some of their comments were so prophetic and demonstrated such an spiritual connection, it was like having a room filled with 24-year old crystal/indigo children. And the comments they were making about their own children were equally as impressive in terms of the children’s wisdom and worldliness. How is that possible…at the age of 5?
So…the result it left for us older guys in the room, was that this was a fresh, positive and gentle generation that will soon be taking positions of influence in our world. The energy in the room was palpable. It left us with a deep feeling of hopefulenss and a renewed anticipation of the future. Thank God.
